Sustainability gets talked about a lot in fashion. But for most jewellery, it remains an afterthought — materials mined from the earth, processed with chemicals, shipped halfway around the world.
Cork is different. And once you understand its full story, it's hard to go back.
A material that gives back to the planet
Cork oak forests — known in Portugal as montados — are one of the world's most biodiverse ecosystems. They're home to endangered species like the Iberian lynx and the black stork, and they support entire communities of farmers, harvesters, and artisans who have worked with cork for generations.
When you buy cork products, you're not just choosing a sustainable material. You're helping to keep these forests economically valuable — which is the single most important reason they continue to exist.
Zero waste. Zero harm.
The cork harvesting process produces virtually no waste. The bark is stripped by hand tools, dried naturally, and processed without the use of heavy machinery or harmful chemicals. Offcuts and trimmings from cork production are ground down and compressed to make other cork products — nothing is discarded.
Compare this to gold or silver mining, which involves excavating vast quantities of earth, using mercury and cyanide in processing, and generating significant carbon emissions. Or plastic, which is derived from fossil fuels and takes hundreds of years to break down.
Cork is harvested. It grows back. It biodegrades. That's a closed loop that almost no other jewellery material can claim.
Lightweight means less carbon in transit too
Because cork is so light, shipping cork jewellery has a significantly lower carbon footprint than shipping heavier metal or stone pieces. It's a small detail, but it matters.
Sustainable doesn't mean compromise
One of the things I'm most proud of at Bella Cork Studio is that choosing something sustainable doesn't mean settling for less. Our pieces are designed to be genuinely beautiful — distinctive, well-crafted, and made to last. You shouldn't have to choose between ethics and elegance.
Every time you reach for a pair of our cork earrings instead of a fast fashion alternative, you're making a small but real choice. And those choices, multiplied across thousands of women, add up to something meaningful.
Rooted in where I come from
I grew up with cork as part of my Portuguese identity. It's on wine bottles, in buildings, in the hands of artisans who've worked with it for centuries. Bringing it into contemporary jewellery design felt like the most natural thing in the world — a way of honouring where I come from while creating something that looks forward.
Sustainable jewellery isn't a trend. It's what thoughtful making has always looked like.
