I had all the same questions when I first started working with cork. And once I understood what this extraordinary material really is, I couldn't imagine creating with anything else.
Cork comes from trees — and it's harvested without harming them
Cork is the bark of the cork oak tree (Quercus suber), found mainly in Portugal and Spain. What makes it remarkable is how it's harvested: skilled workers carefully strip the outer bark by hand, without cutting down or damaging the tree. The tree then regenerates its bark naturally, growing it back over the following years.
A cork oak can live for over 200 years and be harvested more than 15 times in its lifetime. Each harvest actually makes the tree healthier — it absorbs more CO₂ as it regenerates. It's one of the most genuinely sustainable materials on earth.
When I first learned this, it felt like a metaphor I couldn't ignore. A material that grows back stronger after being stripped back. I knew women like that. I am a woman like that.
What does cork jewellery feel like to wear?
Cork is incredibly lightweight — often lighter than plastic — which makes it ideal for earrings. You can wear a pair all day and forget they're there. It's also naturally warm to the touch, soft, and slightly textured, which gives each piece a beautifully organic feel.
Because cork is a natural material, no two pieces are exactly alike. The subtle grain patterns mean every pair of earrings is unique — just like the woman wearing them.
Is cork jewellery durable?
Yes — more than most people expect. Cork is naturally water-resistant, flexible, and resilient. It won't crack, tarnish, or lose its shape with everyday wear. The main thing to avoid is prolonged exposure to water or perfume directly on the cork, which can affect the finish over time.
